The Hallelujah Girls

Synopsis:

Hilarity abounds when the feisty females of Eden Falls, Georgia, decide to shake up their lives. The action takes place in the SPA-DEE-DAH!, the abandoned church-turned-day-spa where this group of friends gathers every Friday afternoon. After the loss of a dear friend, the women realize time is precious, and if they’re going to change their lives and achieve their dreams, they have to start now. But Sugar Lee, their high-spirited, determined leader, has her hands full keeping the women motivated. Carlene has given up on romance, after burying three husbands. Nita is a nervous wreck from running interference between her problematic son and his probation officer. Mavis’ marriage is so stagnant she is wondering how she can fake her own death to get out of it. And sweet, simple Crystal entertains them all, singing Christmas carols with her own hilarious lyrics. The comic tension mounts when a sexy ex-boyfriend shows up unexpectedly, a marriage proposal comes from an unlikely suitor, and Sugar Lee’s archrival vows she’ll stop at nothing to steal the spa away from her. But the time the women rally together to overcome these obstacles and launch their new, improved lives.

 * * * * * * * * *

The Characters in order of appearance (ages are approximate):

 Carlene Travis – A no-nonsense woman with a dry wit --- in her late 40’s to mid 50’s

 Nita Mooney – A sweet and simple countrywoman --- in her late 40’s to mid 50’s

 Mavis Flowers – A brusque, but likeable woman in her late 50’s to mid 60’s

 Crystal Hart – A daffy and loveable woman in her mid-40’s to mid-50’s, Crystal tends to re-write the words to Christmas carols to suit the occasion.  She should be able to play the piano.

Sugar Lee Thompkins – Vivacious and upbeat, in her late 40’s to mid 50’s

Bunny Sutherland – While seemingly pleasant with an ever-ready smile, Bunny is the passive-aggressive, self-proclaimed social arbiter of Eden Falls; she’s in her late 40’s to mid 50’s.

Bobby Dwayne Dillahunt – Rugged, good-looking handyman in his late 40’s to mid 50’s.  He has a self-deprecating sense of humor and a charming manner.

Porter Padgett – A good-hearted, gregarious blowhard (in his 50’s to early 60’s) who doesn’t know when to shut up.  He speaks louder than most people.

   Stage & Tech Crew:  The stage crew will need to make quick scene changes to reflect the changing holiday seasons.  Lighting is very simple, and there are just a few sound effects: phone rings, a massive rumble and crash, and the rumbling of heavy construction equipment.  If I cannot cast a pianist in the role of Crystal, we may need to record a piano soundtrack for her songs.
