Terms of Endearment

adapted for the stage by Dan Gordon

Terms of Endearment is a heartfelt, funny, and deeply moving story about family, love, and the complicated bonds that shape our lives. Centered on the enduring relationship between a strong-willed mother and her independent daughter, the play follows their lives through moments of humor, heartbreak, and everything in between. As time passes and unexpected challenges arise, Terms of Endearment reminds us that even imperfect relationships can be the ones that matter most.

Character Breakdown

Aurora Greenway

Mother to Emma. Throughout the play, Aurora is seen at different moments in her life, but her character is always clear. She is at times a caring mother for Emma, but it can be initially questioned whether this comes from genuine care for her, or through a desire to keep up appearances. Aurora is capable of both love for others, and a display of empty coldness that can create distance in relationships. She is classy, elegant, and always aware of how others may perceive her.

Emma Greenway

Daughter to Aurora. Emma is the product of being raised by her mother, Aurora. She is at times everything her mother is not. She is dumpy, awkwardly dressed, and doesn’t put too much effort into her appearance, but she is also capable of great introspection. Her power as a person comes from within.

Garrett Breedlove
Retired astronaut and next-door neighbor to Aurora. Garrett is a past-his-prime womanizer who hides his yearning for past years under a thick dosage of alcohol. His egregious behavior is only offset by his budding relationship with Aurora.
Flap Horton
Emma’s high school sweetheart and now struggling fiance. The only times we see Flap truly speak to Emma is when he wants sex. In an effort to create his own path in life he takes up a position as a professor in Des Moines, Iowa, creating a massive separation in distance for Emma and Aurora.
Patsy Clark

Emma’s best friend. We see Patsy by Emma’s side throughout the play. She is a dedicated friend, intelligent, and successful.
